This week we have been learning more about time in Maths and doing some very hard problems. In Literacy we have been practising writing even better sentences and getting better at writing sentences with people speaking - using speech marks. We have also made up some characters and described them. For IPC we looked at optical illusions - tricks of the light and how early moving pictures were created - the pictures were not really moving at all. We have also been looking at maps and symbols and aerial photographs. We found our school and things near it that we did not know were there -like a water fountain!!!

We only had 3 days at school this week so we had to work even harder to get everything done. In Maths we were looking at some hard number work with huge numbers; in Literacy we were writing stories making sure we used exciting and interesting sentences as well as getting all the punctuation correct. For our IPC topic we have been doing some tests to show that light travels in a straight line, it is made up of the colours of the rainbow, we can bend light and objects can be opaque, transparent or translucent. We also decided what things were light sources and which just reflected light from another source.

We have worked hard this week. We took a little time out to say goodbye to Ismayil whose last day in school was Wednesday 28th. We hope all the family enjoy living in Moscow and that we all stay in touch. Our 3rd featured artist this week was Georges Seurat - another French artist. Amongst other things he is famous for using a style known as Pointillism. This is pictures created from lots of coloured dots. We created our own with paintbrushes (both ends) and cotton buds after doing a design with coloured pencils.

We have been doing fractions in Maths and writing beautiful descriptions in Literacy;- you will have to come to our assembly on Thursday 5th June to hear them!! As well as Henri Matisse, we have been looking at the work of Wassiley Kandinsky who was born 3 years before Matisse and dies 10 years before him. One of his most famous styles was the drawing of colourful circles which reflected his mood and feelings. Here are some of our circle drawings in pastels and some interpretations of a famous picture by Henri Matisse called 'The Snail'.

Welcome back to everyone for the last term of the year. It has been a busy start to the new term - and a very HOT week!!!!
Our new topic is 'Paintings, Pictures and Photographs'. As our entry point we discussed a picture Mr. Edwards brought in and then created our own pictures using just a part of the big picture. This week we have been looking at the life and works of Henri Matisse - especially his 'Cut Outs' in which he created pictures from coloured pieces of paper cut into shapes. Examples of some of our early work are below but you will have to come to our class assembly on Thursday 5th June to find out more!!!

Today is a special day - it is St. George's Day. He is the patron saint of England - where Mr. Edwards comes from. It is also 450 years since William Shakespeare was born - he is a famous writer from England. As we are also finishing our topic on chocolate, Mr. Edwards organised a special treat.

This week we have been looking at lists and instructions in Literacy, using command verbs with recipes. In Maths we have been looking at looking at weight and capacity - very important to know if you are following a recipe. We have also been looking at Fairtrade. Cocoa farmers and chocolate producers are among those who take part;- the farmers get paid a fair price and use the money to help their family get fresh water, uniforms and books for school and they can buy new tools and machines so that they produce better cocoa and better chocolate. How many Fairtrade products will you see next time you are in the supermarket?

Maths graphs and writing about 'The Magic Finger'.
04.04.2014
We have all worked very hard this week. As well as practising our times tables and division sums, we have looked at graphs and charts and answered questions using the information. In English we have been detectives trying to find the clues in a story and to predict what will happen next. Mr. Edwards has been reading 2 books to us - 'The Magic Finger' and 'The Chocolate Touch'. We cant wait to see if our predictions are correct. We have also been predicting in Science. We set up a fair test to see if different wrappers are better than others at stopping the chocolate from having a different smell and taste.

This is what we did ......................................................
Put a chocolate bar in a bag with strong smelling onions. 4 chocolate bars are in different wrappers and one has no wrapper. We all thought the one with no wrapper would be the chocolate bar that changes the most at the end of the test.
Finding out if we were right!!!!

It was exciting having our mums in on Wednesday to help us with our stories and our Science - it was a shame that so many children have been sick in school. We have got better at division sums in Maths this week and looked at symmetry too. We used the computer to research Mayan and Aztec patterns and found that many of them are symmetrical patterns or repeating patterns. We looked at their patterns because they were the first people to drink chocolate.

We have also set up some Science experiments with chocolate to test;- a) How chocolate changes in different places (freezer, on a heater, in a room, in the 'fridge, in a cupboard); b) Why chocolate wrappers are made from special types of paper; c) Which type of chocolate melts the fastest;- it was the milk chocolate!! The white chocolate did not melt at all!!! How can that be true???
![Picture](/uploads/1/1/2/5/11252166/7872544_orig.jpg)
The milk chocolate (in the middle) melted first. The milk chocolate and the dark chocolate were the same shape as the white chocolate at the start of the test - the white chocolate has not melted though it was a fair test. All the pieces were the same size. It was a reversible change because when we put the melted chocolate in a cool place it became hard again.

Another busy week. In Literacy we have been practising writing sentences and using connectives to make them more interesting. In Maths - more tables practice and learning how to do division. Look at the photos below for 2 simple examples of division.

For our topic on 'Chocolate' we have been learning more about how chocolate is made into different things - not just bars of chocolate. It was over 3000 years ago when people started drinking 'chocolati' in Mexico. To change the flavour of the cocoa beans they used to add chillis or other peppers - not sugar like we do today. Did you known that cocoa beans were also used instead of money - 10 cocoa beans = 1 rabbit!! In Art we drew some cacao pods using 4 different media;- water colour paints, pencil crayons, pastes and oil pastels. The results are below in the photographs.

This week we have been practising our times tables and trying multiplication sums. In Literacy we have been looking at fiction and non fiction books so that we know how to take notes from information books. This has already helped us with our new topic 'Chocolate'. To start the topic we used our 5 senses to hear, smell, touch, see and, of course, taste chocolate. Most of us found it difficult to tell the difference between milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate and caramel chocolate. With our note taking skills we found out some information about where chocolate comes from - did you know chocolate grows on trees!!!!! Here is our own cacao tree with the cocoa pods growing on the trunk and branches.

International Book Week has finished. In a world tour, we have been to New Zealand, Peru, Iceland and Mongolia. For most of the week we have been learning about Mongolia;- its beautiful landscapes, The Gobi Desert and the animals that live there, Ulaanbaatar its capital city and lots, lots more. The photos here just show part of the work we have done. Now we all need a holiday!!!

This week has been packed full of learning. We have learnt even more about 3D shapes and their properties and made some models from nets. In Literacy we have written and performed poems. As next week is International Book Week, we have tried very hard to complete our topic on 'Inventions That Changed The World'. As an exit point we designed some simple inventions with a construction kit; they may be simple but they are very clever inventions.

Digital Art
Today, we have been making some digital art. We took photographs using the iPad, and then we transferred them onto the computer and edited the photographs using Microsoft Word. We are becoming much more independent when using the computers and iPads. Tomorrow, we will think about some of the inventions that we used in digital art. Mr Frater likes digital art because it is not so messy. What kind of art do you like?

Inventions In Communication
We can communicate in lots of different ways, using inventions like the telephone and the internet to help us. We read books and looked on the internet to find out more information about these inventions. It was certainly much more difficult to communicate over long distances in the past! We learned about Morse code, and how to make the signal for 'SOS'.
