Year 2
Term 1
15/12/14
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, at least in CET! The decorations are up, the Christmas Tree holds pride of place at reception and the children have also been doing their part to make the place look it's best!
We've been busy doing some very festive drawings (which you will see on Wednesday) and writing our letters to Santa, all the while practicing voraciously for our Winter Concert. So Mums and Dads of Tyumen, if your children are a little lethargic in the evenings it's because they are all tuckered out from working so hard at school. Maybe they deserve that extra ten minutes of television time :-D

Also a very warm congratulations to Uliana who celebrated her birthday on Saturday AND brought cake to school for everyone today! So Happy Birthday and a big THANK YOU :-)

What a busy week! Firstly I would like to welcome back Christian after his absence. Your energy has been missed :-)

Speaking of Christian, and as you can see from the photo above, he has been designated as our official Winter Concert photographer. I should hope he always has his camera at the ready because the whole school has been very hard-working in trying to get set for the big night. Be it rehearsing, learning lines at home, creating fantastic advertising posters or even writing letters to our parents to ask for help with our costumes it really has been non-stop!
So please continue supporting your kids in preparing and keep an eye out for the soon-to-be-published special Winter Concert web page!
Congratulations to Uliana who this week earned her silver certificate and a very happy birthday to Valeria who reached the ripe old age of 7 today!

Another enjoyable week has drawn to a close with lots achieved. We slightly tweaked our plans for Literacy by studying our soon-to-be-performed traditional tale, 12 months rather than the previously planned fables. It gave us a jump start on our preparations for the all important winter extravaganza while also allowing us to plough ahead with our language learning. Mathematics involved a stringent test of our mental capabilities, more of which is to follow with next weeks mental maths programme.
It is in IPC where the week really proved to be at the peak of it's powers with our visit to a traditional Hunti-Mansi camp, observing how they lived and compared it to how we ourselves live. Have a look at our pictures and see for yourself!
Next week is important as our preparations for the winter concert officially begin. Scripts have been sent home, so please show encouragement and help your children to learn their lines and understand their roles. It is already evident how important this is to the children, so please help them to fulfill whatever role it is that they have been given to the best of their ability.
Ahmed needs a special mention as he has already earned enough house points to earn his silver certificate.

Time waits for no man, thankfully we are making the most of what we have. This week in Literacy we studied the difference between fictional and non-fictional texts, our focus laying with information texts. We discussed usual and unusual pets, made a plan as to write a text on why dogs are good pets, and today completed our very first information texts, paragraphs included! We also began to learn how to use dictionaries. It won't be long before we don't need a teacher anymore! Next week we are going to study fables.
Mathematics involved addition and subtraction. We used our knowledge of facts up to twenty (for some of us beyond that) to answer complete some very challenging tasks given to us by Mr McKenna.
And in IPC we took on the role of archaeologists and found some very interesting things (photos of which will soon be available) and created our own class museum. Next week we are taking our archaeological knowledge outside of the school as we are going on a trip. I can't ruin the surprise now, but log on next week to see the fantastic place we visited.

Week 1, Term 2 is a thing of the past. Time is flying by here and it's hard to imagine we already have 10 weeks of the school year under our belts. I hope everyone had a nice holiday but now it's back down to business. In Mathematics we learned how to deal with money and did some work on telling the time, both very important life skills, the former a skill which some people never fully come to terms with. Literacy's topic was animals and pets and in IPC we started our new topic "Time Detectives" in which we have already learned the difference between an archaeologist and a historian. Next week we are going to conduct an archaeological dig and create a class museum. Our Friday's have also changed a little, as we have swapped swimming for gymnastics. Clubs are also underway, with the older kids lucky enough to have Drama Club with Miss Yana! Below you will find attached a timetable for the coming term. Also a big congratulations to Alexander, Anna and Christian who earned enough house points to secure their bronze certificates! |

Another hectic week has drawn to a close. In Maths we have been collecting and collating data on different kinds of graphs, and answering questions based on comparing the information we collected. Our topic of comparison ran through to our Literacy as we used different adjectives to compare different things. Everyone behaved well as our IPC Goal for the week was morality. Speaking of IPC, we concluded our All Dressed Up topic this week, reviewing what we have learned while some of the children brought in and modeled their favourite outfits for us. Our next topic is Time Detectives. I wonder what the teachers have in store for us... Also next week is Book Week! A quick mention for Ahmed too, as last week he was the first person in the class to earn a certificate! Congratulations on a well earned recognition! |
17/10/14
Week 7 has already finished! It is hard to believe how quickly time is going by! We've spent another busy week doing lots of things including learning how to use rulers and meter sticks to measure in centimeters and meters. Did you know that at a staggering 1m 35cm, Ahmed is the tallest boy in the class, maybe even the school! We've also been writing letters to a boy from Kenya, something which is connected with our IPC topic and Literacy. We learned about many different African countries and what they wear in these places but focused on Uwai's country on the East Coast of the continent. |

Week 6 is done and dusted and the learning process goes on. We studied the weather intensively, learning about the Beaufort Scale and how we can use it to measure the strength of the wind and studied the water cycle and the stages of evaporation, condensation and precipitation. We can use this knowledge to help us to dress suitably for any given weather! In Mathematics we have been doing some calculations while in Literacy we listened to a story about a little girl who wished for a pet so much that one dropped from the sky and landed in her lap!

Almost two months into Year 2 life and I for one couldn't be happier. Everyone is working hard and enjoying themselves while doing so. We are learning new things every day and I can't wait to see what the rest of term has in store. Last week we studied place value in Maths, wrote down the ingredients and recipe for our favorite foods in Literacy and followed the journey of wool from sheep to scarf. Look below and you can even see some weaving we did ourselves after first practicing with card ! We also took part in the Category Challenge with Year 3 in which we had to think of words beginning with different letters for lots of different categories. |

Another busy week has come to an end. We have been working hard planning and writing stories, studying number sequences and place value while furthering our study of clothes around the world. There has been lots of writing this week so we are all very tired but it has all been worth it! On a lighter but equally important note we designed and created our own time machines, which will help us to travel to and study different points in history. Have a look at our creations for yourself!

Hi everyone! Just to re-clarify here is a list of what the children will need to bring to school/do on a day to day basis as there have been some cases of forgotten books and homework. Please ensure that your child is up to date and that they have what they need in their bags before coming to school.

Below you will find my overview for Literacy for this year. It is a very general document which is there to provide a timeline during the different areas of the curriculum are to be addressed. It is in no way final, as is the case with all planning documents. For your information I have also attached the plan from which we have been working this week. It is much more detailed and highlights the thought put into challenging each child relative to their needs and abilities as discussed on Parents Information Night. While I try to keep to this plan as much as possible, it can be subject to change depending on the different activities which are ongoing in the school, meaning some elements may not be dealt with until a later date. I do, however, hope it goes some way to show you that every effort is being made for every child.

Wow! Week two was both busier and more productive than I had expected! We furthered our study of shape, even branching into the area of symmetry. In Literacy we studied some different types of shape poems and wrote one about lions at the end of the week. We learned about carnivores, herbivores and omnivores and began to create a fact file on our chosen animals during ICT. We also had the first of our weekly spelling tests. We then heard the story of The Emperor's New Clothes and used our knowledge of his flamboyant character to create a suitable uniform for his personal guard. If it sounds hectic and fun-filled that's because it was!

Well week one is over, we all know each other a little better and are becoming more comfortable by the day. I was really impressed with how bright and eager to be involved these kids were. It made coming to work fun! This week, we discussed the different roles and jobs we would all have to share during the year, created amazing Pupil Profiles, studied shape, sentence structure and even dared to create our own inventions and enormous crocodiles! We also enjoyed some belated birthday celebrations for Melissa. If this week is anything to go by, we are all going to have a great time this year!
