Year 2
24/04/15
Another in a line of fruitful weeks. P.E. offered something different in that we tried a new sport called bench ball. It was quite challenging and unfortunately we were left ruing missed opportunities as we were beaten by Year 3 in what proved to be a very closely contested affair. It was also our last week of dance for this year as we said our goodbyes to Miss Polina. Thank you for your time here.
IPC had us exploring the functions of the different organs of the body, creating a wonderful display in the process. Mathematics saw some work with division while Literacy saw us tidy up the final of our poetry studies.
We also sketched some wonderful pictures of the different animals that are found in Russia which will go on display next week.

A new week has brought a new topic, namely "Super Humans". We've focused on the skeleton this week, looking at the different body parts and how they are joined while also comparing and contrasting our skeleton to those of different animals.

In Literacy we have added similes and onomatopoeia to our ever growing repertoire of poetic techniques creating some fantastic poems in the process.
Mathematics saw us do a little more on capacity before doing a quick revision of our times tables and I'm pleased to report that all of the children did well in Friday's quiz. |

Congratulations to Melissa and Anna who received their Ruby and Gold Certificates respectively! A continuance of what has been an exemplary term for both girls!
In Literacy we turned our hands to poetry and what a successful choice that proved to be with everyone writing two wonderful pieces using such techniques as rhyme and alliteration.
We all got very good scores in our times tables tests too!
We also closed our IPC Topic "Material World" by designing our own new and improved bikes but not before we had a chance to study electricity and carry out some investigations on the same!
A quick reminder to the forgetful of you that homework books are due on Fridays so as to give Mr McKenna a chance to correct them and get the homework for the following week ready.

A very enjoyable week. We wrote our own diaries from the perspective of our favourite animal, studied addition with and without regrouping and studied magnets and magnetism. We tested different things around the classroom to find out if certain materials are attracted to or repelled by magnets. We also created some tricks of our own for April Fool's Day and made Easter Cards for our families. On Tuesday, we said goodbye to Lera. We are very glad to have had the opportunity to know her and wish her all the best for the future. |

Excellent week Year 2! I was delighted and surprised by how far our work with fractions took us as all children can now find a single fraction of a number and some can find larger fractions! I think the hard work we put in with our times tables really helped here.
IPC saw us focus on the history, structure and workings of a bicycle. We learned which materials were used and which we use now and even made our own gears based on how the chain of a bicycle works!
In Literacy we heard some stories about dreams and began the planning phase of retelling our own dreams in written form.
We also said our goodbyes to Bekir this week who is returning to Turkmenistan. We wish you all the best and hope that your future will be as bright as your time here.

A decent week was had by the children of Year 2. They worked quite well for the most part but I must say that concentration levels were not at their usual high standard.
Maths saw an introduction to halves and quarters which went very well. We were able to use our previous knowledge of division to aid us with our work. Literacy was fun because we had a new story detailing the daily life of a very mischievous wombat. In IPC we started our new topic called Material World. We looked at and investigated everyday objects to find out what they were made from and why this material might have been used. Next week we are going to study how bicycles are made and work!
On Tuesday, we celebrated St. Patrick's Day, the national holiday of Ireland (the country where Mr McKenna was born!), by dressing up as leprechauns.

13/03/15, Health and Fitness Week
A very busy and achievement-filled week all round. As our focus for Health Week Year 2 took a closer look at the wonder that is the human body. We learned all about the skeleton and muscle pairs as well as examining the workings of the circulatory system. In Mathematics we delved further into the world of division and are becoming more comfortable with this topic by the day. Some of us can even go as using 8 as a divisor! Next week, it's back to normal and we start with our new IPC topic "Material World". Please scroll down the page to find the timetable which has not changed, but Friday's dance lesson may yet be moved. |
28/02/15, International Week
A fun-filled week brought an exciting close to a wonderful half-term. We learned about some of the joyous celebrations offered from the African Continent as well as having some input from our parents. Thanks to all involved, especially the kids who as ever did themselves proud.

13/02/2015, Week 5
Congratulations Year 2! Except for a couple of minor hiccoughs this was by far our most accomplished week as a class. Through our use of instructive language in Literacy we have created a new set of classroom rules which we have all followed. We've done a great job in learning our times tables and earned ourselves lots of stickers and house points for our cooperation and behaviour!
Next week sees us go on a trip to the Natural History Museum which we are all very excited about. Stay tuned for the imminent arrival of this weeks pictures!

A great week all around. We planned and wrote our own dragon-themed fantasy stories, did some time tests, studied and created Morse Code messages and continued with our dance programme! We also made our own telephones and did some printing as inspired by Johannes Gutenberg. Phew! Take time to relax this weekend children, you were super!

Next week we move on to multiplication and division in Maths, instructions in English, while we complete our look at the inventors and inventions that are important to the world of media.
Parents, if you could please take note of some slight changes to the timetable below. All children will have Russian lessons on Monday and Tuesday, while the native speakers will have after school lessons on Wednesday and Friday. Apologies for any confusion or inconvenience caused. Ms Tanya, who is a university-qualified musician will also take the children for a specialised music lesson on Friday evenings. Her expertise greatly outweighs that of Mr McKenna in this area!

30/01/2015, Week 3.
A busy week and one in which we had full attendance for the first time this term! Hooray! In Mathematics we focused on subtraction with and without borrowing, a topic we will continue with for half of next week. Literacy saw yet more tales of dragons from the fantasy world. Our topic, media magic saw us learn about the structure and functions of the ear which meant some difficult new words and phrases that we all grasped surprisingly quickly. It prepares us perfectly for next week as we will look more closely at some of the media of communication, namely the telephone and the telegraph, while also looking at the major inventors and inventions in the world of media.

23/01/15, Week 2.
In a week which has been dominated by absence and illness we have had some very exciting and productive moments from the female members of our class who have held strong and come to school every day. We planned, wrote and illustrated our own stories based on the same subject matter as those of Hansel and Gretel and Baba Yega. They turned out very well! We also continued with our topic and have decided to make a documentary about the school and surrounding area. We've started the planning phase by deciding which information it is we will need to communicate through our show. Next week we will focus on the work of a sound engineer! |

A very productive start to what will be a very productive term! The children were every bit as excited as I was to be back at school and showed plenty of enthusiasm during our lessons.
To begin the week we played some new games which Mr McKenna brought back from Ireland. They were quite challenging so we enlisted the help of year 3 and had lots of fun trying to solve the different puzzles. In the picture you can see that we are trying to make shapes using tangrams based a Pythagorean theorem.
We also studied and compared two different stories, namely Hansel and Gretel and Baba Yaga. They showed both contrasts and similarities.
We also began dance classes on Friday with our new teacher Ms Polina and we all showed resilience to get through a physically demanding session.
Next week we are going to continue our study of the movie-making industry as a part of our Media Magic IPC topic!
