WEEK 6
June 15th-19th
What an exciting week! We didn't just go on ONE trip, we went on TWO! We visited a garden centre to see lots of different FLOWERS, and we visited a butterfly house to learn more about butterflies, which are a kind of INSECT!

Sports Day was a great success! And Miss Carleton is extremely proud of all the RESILIENCE, CO-OPERATION and of course SPORTSMANSHIP which she saw all of the children demonstrate.

This week we couldn't believe how much our Mr. Grass Heads had grown! Although Sofia's has some catching up to do because she wasn't here last week!

There was a Mr. Grass Head accident this week, but luckily they soon recovered, and started growing hair!

GLOBAL ISSUES WEEK
May 12th-15th
WELCOME BACK EVERYONE! It was wonderful hearing about everyone's holiday and talking about our illustrations. Thank you to MAX who was very thoughtful and brought a souvenir from his holiday to Sochi for all the children, and Miss Carleton and Miss Bogdanova too! And very well done to VLAD for achieving his RUBY certificate, and LEONYA for achieving his GOLD certificate!
This week was GLOBAL ISSUES WEEK and our class focused on WASTE and RECYCLING. We also visited other teachers and learnt about more Global Issues with them, such as Homelessness and Poverty, Climate Change and Overpopulation.
Our final day of this special week was very exciting as we held the Charity Cake Sale at school which was very successful! Thank you to all of the parents for your support.

TERM 2B
This was the exit point for our IPC It's Shocking! topic. We made campfires with ELECTRIC CIRCUITS! We used many different art materials- JUNK CARD and PLASTIC, TISSUE PAPER, PVA GLUE, GLITTER, CHALK PASTELS, SALT DOUGH and PAINT. And we used lots of different art techniques with our materials- BLENDING, GLUING, PAINTING and MODELLING. The most exciting part was pressing the switch on our electric circuit to see our campfires glow!

In our version of CINDERELLA, AMANDA was Cinderella, LEONYA the mouse, MASHA the fairy Godmother, and SASHA A the Prince. Click on the pictures to look at and read our story!
SASHA S, SOFIA, VLADA, ALEXANDER, MAX and VLAD are the wonderful actors in this version of CINDERELLA. Everyone wanted to be the Prince and Cinderella, so we used CO-OPERATION and ADAPTABILITY to share the different roles. See if you can spot who is which character in each photo!

This week we have been learning how some electricity is created from oil and natural gas...and where oil and natural gas come from. We even tried to find some in our playground using the plans that MAX and VLAD drew!

CONGRATULATIONS to MAX and SASHA A. on achieving their SILVER certificates, and to SOFIA and LEONYA for getting their RUBY certificates. You all worked extremely hard to earn your house points. And well done to ALL of Year 1, the best class in the whole school for using their RESILIENCE this week. I hope that you will all get stickers next week for your CO-OPERATION, next week's IPC personal goal. Everyone used great co-operation in the fun game we played in assembly! Keep it up next week!
We went on a fun egg hunt to celebrate Easter. We had to use our sharp eyesight to find clues, and then read the clues to find out where the eggs were hidden. Afterwards we decorated our eggs!
We were using MONEY in MATHS this week. We used our number bonds to 10 to help us add and subtract different amounts of money. We are able to use our money skills in our roleplay area!
MAX did some beautiful work at home about ELECTRICITY, our IPC topic. He explained his work to the class, and showed it to rest of Year 1 who used their listening skills very well. Thank you for sharing your work with us Max!
WEEK 4

WOW! What a fun week we had learning about STATIC ELECTRICITY! We learnt that ELECTRONS move from one object to another when they are rubbed, and this causes a NEGATIVE charge. If two charges are DIFFERENT they ATTRACT, and if they are the SAME they REPEL.

It was Miss Carleton's turn to do assembly this week! Luckily all of Year 1 were THOUGHTFUL enogh to help her teach the other children about our new IPC Personal Goal, THOUGHTFULNESS! And congratulations to SASHA S. who received a sticker for being the best student in year 1 at COMMUNICATION- remembering to LISTEN as well as talk , AND Sasha S. also received her SILVER certificate. WELL DONE!!!
Welcome back to school VLAD! And thank you for being so THOUGHTFUL and bringing special gifts for everyone! We really missed you last week.
We started our new IPC topic this week, called IT'S SHOCKING! It is all about ELECTRICITY. We had a special guest, Miss Hannah, who showed us a very interesting LEMON BATTERY experiment!
In English this week we were learning about TRADITIONAL TALES. Did you know that before books, people used to remember entire stories in their brain, and pass them on from one person to the next?! We listened to a traditional tale from China about a dinosaur and a dragon!
We had a great MUSIC lesson in the special music room this week! We used many different kinds of percussion to make a beat, and we practiced our stopping and starting skills.
We started new dance lessons this Friday, it was difficult but fun. PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR DANCE SHOES AND PE KIT TO SCHOOL EVERY WEEK!

WOW! What an exciting 1st week back to school! This week was HEALTH AND FITNESS WEEK! We did exercises in the hall EVERY MORNING! We also learnt about the skeleton with Mr. McKenna, healthy eating with Mr. Curry, dental hygiene with Miss Yana, and all about food safety with Miss Carleton. "CLEAN, SEPARATE, COOK and CHILL, or bad bacteria will make you ill!" We also had a special guest, Mrs. Chatar, who taught us about being healthy.
Of course we did lots of other work this week, including focusing on MEASURING in Maths. We used cubes to measure many different objects in our classroom!

INTERNATIONAL WEEK!!! This week we learnt about Asia with Miss Carleton, South America with Miss Yana, Africa with Mr. McKenna, and Europe with Mr.Curry. We learnt a lot about SOUTH KOREA with Miss Carleton, because she used to be a teacher there! She even made our classroom door into a South Korean flag!
We learnt how to make Korean pancakes, write New Year wishes, write and say HAPPY NEW YEAR in Korean! And play traditional Korean games.

This week's IPC topic was ADAPTABILITY. Well done to EVERYONE who was at school this week! Our final IPC 5 Senses topic was TASTE. We went to cafe Artishok and made our own pizzas! We used ALL of our 5 senses, but TASTE was the best!
We started our INTERNATIONAL WEEK on Friday, learning about and celebrating the traditional Russian celebration of MASLENITSA! We prepared our own pancakes, made straw dolls to burn outside (with strict teacher supervision) to welcome the spring, and played traditional Russian games in the hall. It was very interesting and a lot of fun!

Our IPC goal this week was CO-OPERATION. We are very good at using co-operation most of the time in year 1, just watch our video below to see lots of examples from this term. And well done to the students who showed excellent co-operation this week.

In IPC this week, we were learning about the sense TOUCH. Look at the pictures below to see our fantastic oobleck experiment. Oobleck FELT icky, sticky, smooth, silky, runny, and when we froze it, it felt cold! It was a lot of fun, and you can see the oobleck recipe below.

This week's IPC goal was MORALITY. Congratulations to SOPHIA and AMANDA for always being very moral and setting an excellent example to the other children.
In ENGLISH we are continuing to learn about INSTRUCTIONS. We worked together to give instructions about how to draw Mo Willems' Pigeon! We even wrote our own Don't let the Pigeon...stories! We will publish them here when we have finished illustrating them.
MATHS was very interesting and fun this week. We were learning about how to measure WEIGHT, and which object was HEAVIER or LIGHTER. We weighed lots of different things, including St. Basil's, dinosaurs, fruit and a sheep!
We were focusing on SMELL in IPC this week, and we continue to explore all of the different senses in our Sensory Area. Thank you to ALEXANDER, who brought some special furs to school for us to TOUCH, the sense that we will be studying next week.
And here are some other 'goings on'from our class this week...MAX was the guest teacher and taught us how to make a rocket using INSTRUCTIONS, SASHA S. remembered her water bottle!!!! MISS CARLETON remembered to take photos of BEKIR and SASHA S. and their BRONZE certificates, and MASHA and BEKIR got their SILVER certificates in assembly. What a great week!
WEEK 3
January 26th-30th
This week our IPC goal was THOUGHTFULNESS. Well done to SASHA S, MAX, MASHA and BEKIR who received their stickers and got a double thumbs up from Mr. McKenna in assembly!
DANCE class is hard work! This week we were following INSTRUCTIONS (like in our English work this week). We had to work together using CO-OPERATION. At the end we did a lot of stretching. It was difficult for some students, but they showed their RESILIENCE by not giving up and trying their best even though it was hard. Watch our video below to see what we do in dance class!

We used our maths skills in IPC class to draw a BAR CHART of our survey results. We also used co-operation to complete our work. On Friday we used the iPads to test our number bonds to 10 knowledge. It was difficult, but our scores got better because of our resilience and co-operation!

We were learning about SIGHT in IPC this week. We did a survey around the whole school to find out about eye colour. Then we recorded our survey results in a bar chart. On Friday we made a KALEIDOSCOPE! It was very interesting to learn about OPAQUE, TRANSLUCENT and TRANSPARENT materials. Our finished kaleidoscopes are amazing!!!

In ENGLISH we were working very hard to read and write POEMS about SOUNDS and TOUCH. And in MATHS we were learning about different number friends to 8, 9 and 10. Did you know that 7 and 3 are number friends with 10?

In IPC we were focusing on HEARING, 1 of the 5 senses. We experimented with different musical instruments, read the book 'The Listening Walk' and went on our own Listening Walk around the school. We also played sound bingo, learnt about how ears work, and drew pictures of the different sounds we could hear. AMANDA brought a delicious cake to school and ALEXANDER brought popcorn. We used our TASTE, TOUCH, SMELL and SIGHT senses to enjoy these yummy snacks!

Welcome back to school! What a busy week we had with our new timetable...We are learning about poetry and rhyming words in ENGLISH, counting up to 100 in MATHS, and learning about the 5 SENSES in our new IPC topic. There are lots of pictures about HEARING, TOUCH, SIGHT, TASTE, and SMELL in the photos below. We had our first dance lesson this week, and we learnt about stretching our bodies carefully. CONGRATULATIONS to MAX, VLADA and VLAD for achieving their bronze certificates. Outside playtime is even MORE fun now, because we have an ICE SLIDE! Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!
