Week Seven
Sadly this was our last week in Reception -we made sure that it was a really fun week...
Week Six: The Closing Ceremony
We are sad to say that this was the final week of our unit 'Let's Get Moving'. It has been a very interesting unit and we have all had a lot of fun. This week we were focusing on Closing Ceremonies and enjoyed our own medal ceremony during sports day!
We learned that at the first Olympics in Ancient Greece they didn't give out medals -instead they gave the athletes crowns made of leaves.
We tried to make patterns with different leaves to create our own beautiful crowns.
We read a book called 'Rainforest Workout'. It showed us lots of different exercises related to animals and other things in the rainforest. We thought of our own exercises and created some more pages for the book...
Move your arms like a bird.
Slither like a snake.
Stretch your neck like a giraffe.
The big event this week was Sports Day! We had so much fun! To have a look at some more pictures click here.
Week Five: Healthy Eating
Our focus this week was healthy eating. We talked about the need to eat a balanced diet and in particular why athletes might eat special foods to keep them fit and healthy, give them energy and build their muscles.
We tried lots of different fruit from passion fruit to lemons!
Some of it was delicious...
...some made us pull funny faces!!
We talked about what makes a balanced meal.
Then we had fun creating our own meals!
Don't they look delicious!!
We also wrote recipes for our own fruit salad and then made it.
The best part was eating it!
Week Four: Other Forms of Exercise
This week we have been thinking about different types of exercise such as walking, dancing and skateboarding. We kept an exercise diary to record the exercise we do each day.
We learned some dance routines...
...and taught them to all of the other children in school!!
We talked about the effect that exercise has on our bodies and general health, then role-played being at the doctors. Using a stethoscope to hear the difference in our heart beat before and after exercise was very interesting.
In Maths we made pictograms and bar graphs to record and display data that we had collected. We now know a lot about what people in our school enjoy doing, eating and even their favourite animals.
After watching some more of the Olympic Opening and Closing Ceremonies, we talked about the variety of music that had been used.
We decided to make our own instruments...
...and had lots of fun creating our own 'ceremony music' with them!
Week Three: Individual and Team Sports
We are still learning about Olympic sports this week but have been focusing on different team and individual sports. We tried to think about how and why team and individual sports are different. We used our knowledge of current Olympic sports to try and think of our own interesting sports! Maybe one day these sports will be in the Olympics!!
Some children took inspiration from the Paralympics and created sports such as Lying Down Hockey and Sitting Tennis!
Other children combined two sports to create games such as Hockey-Football and Basket Ball-Tennis.
Some sports were adapted. For this version of Javelin the athlete has to throw three javelins at the same time!
We even invented our own sports and explained the rules to other children so that they could play.
We have had a lot of fun with numbers this week. We played snap with multiples of 10.
We also made number lines up to 50!
Week Two: Olympic Sports
This week we have been learning about the sports in the Summer Olympics, Winter Olympics and the Paralympics. We were surprised by how many different sports there are but really enjoyed finding out about them. We even tried some of them...
Tennis
Football -we even tried closing our eyes to see what it was like for the blind football players in the Paralympics!
Basketball
Badminton
Athletics -Javelin
In the role-play area we have lots of different exciting Olympic activities including an athlete registration centre, a swimming pool and a podium.
We have been making the equipment we need for different events. We are ready for the cycling now that we have our helmets!
We have been winning lots of medals!
People even came to interview the athletes!
Week One: Olympic Ceremonies
We started a very exciting new unit this week 'Let's Get Moving'. We learned different facts about The Olympics and looked at different Olympic opening ceremonies. We decided to hold our own CET Olympic opening ceremony!
We looked at different Olympic torch designs and then created our own.
We worked together to design our own CET Olympic cauldron.
All of the runners got ready for the torch relay.
Everyone ran with their torch
Then they lit the next runners torch with their flame
Finally the CET Olympic cauldron was lit!
It was a really fun opening ceremony!
We also had our first school swimming lesson! It has been a very busy and exciting week.
